Treasury of American Quilts: Including Complete Patterns and Instructions for Making Your Own Quilts
Published in Hardcover by DIANE Publishing Co (October, 1998)
Authors: Cyril I. Nelson and Carter Houck
Average review score:

All you need in one book
I checked this book out from my library and after flipping through the first few pages, knew that I had to have it. It has a wide variety of quilts for inspiration, and if that is not enough, patterns and directions for making several of the quilts featured. The instructions are extremly helpful; I have several books and magazines, but none equal the information given in Treasury Of American Quilts.

Treehouses 2002 Wall Calendar
Published in Paperback by Andrews McMeel Publishing (15 July, 2001)
Authors: Paul Rocheleau, Peter, Judy Nelson, David Larkin, and Universe Books
Average review score:

a beautiful, whimsical calendar
This companion calendar to Peter and Judy Nelson's 'The Treehouse Book' features photos of fourteen North American treehouses. Treehouses are located in New England, California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, and Paul Rocheleau's photographs are wonderful -- nice lighting and perspective. While most of the featured treehouses are private homes or recreational sites, one is an office and two are commercial inns. I will probably never be lucky enough to have a treehouse office, but I will certainly make an effort to visit the B&B!

January through December 2002 are covered, each accompanied by a large facing photograph that is approximately 11 inches by 11 inches; another very small picture is on the opposite page -- this is sometimes another treehouse but more often a detail or alternative perspective of the one featured for that month. The opposite page also contains a short paragraph of text telling where the treehouse is located and any other interesting information about it, like the treehouse built in memory of a son killed at sea.

The date grid includes holidays, daylight savings time, and seasonal (incl. full moon) information. The grid is rather small, about one-and-a-half inches square for each day, but it is adequate to write in appointments if you are not John Hancock.

This is a beautiful calendar that may well have the power to bring a smile to your face -- a bit of whimsy and romance right on your refrigerator or office wall!

Absolutely wonderful!!
After reading Truth, Comedy & Poetry For All, I realized how great poetry can be. I'm so used to Poetry being the "Roses are Red, Violets are Blue" kinda stuff, and normally I don't like Poetry nor do I really understand it, however in this book the author reveals his inner most thoughts on love and life. Its a great book to read, especially if you're still learning about yourself and your goals.
In short, A great book and worth your while!!!!

Tudo é política
Published in Unknown Binding by MAUAD ()
Author: Nelson Werneck Sodré
Average review score:

Mandatory reading for those interested in Brazil
In the course of a long life, Nelson Werneck Sodre (1911-1998) managed as a military to strike a proeminent carreer, becoming an instructor in the Brazilian General Staff Academy during the late 1940s and retiring as a colonel during the 1960s, despite being persecuted as a member of the Brazilian Communist Party during the Cold War period and having his books withdrawn from circulation during the military dictatorship. This book, as it was, was his last: it's a collection of articles that deal mostly with the consequences of the redemocratization of Brazil during the 1980s and with the era of neoliberal reforms strated with the Collor government (1990-1992) and continued during the Cardoso (1995-?) administration. Very useful for those interested in studying processes of "redemocratization" in the 3rd World from a viewpoint other than the mere achievement of formal democratic institutions. Deserves an Eng. trans - quickly!

ACW Battlefield Tour Bibles
These series of books are the best available resource for conducting ACW battlefield tours - assuming that your purpose in touring battlefields is to study and understand the applicable tactics, strategy and terrain and to develop an appreciation for the objectives and efforts of the participants. If you go to ACW battlefields to gawk and gossip as an everyday tourist then you do not need to study these guides. If you have an active interest in ACW history, military history in general or fascinating chapters in human history, then these guides are remarkable values, "Best Buys". Thorough but not intimidating, insightful and objective, with no deficiencies noted.

Ulster's Uncertain Defenders: Protestant Political, Paramilitary and Community Groups and the Northern Ireland Conflict
Published in Paperback by Syracuse Univ Pr (Trade) (September, 1987)
Author: Sarah Nelson
Average review score:

A fresh and valuable perspective on the conflict in Ulster
Sarah Nelson provides a perspective on the conflict in Ulster not found in other works on the subject. Many writers focus on the theoretical aspects of the struggle or the historical background to sectarian strife. Nelson's investigation provides a revealing look at the dynamics influencing interaction within the Protestant community usually overlooked by other writers.

Nelson's analysis reveals conflicts and divisions within the Protestant community. She highlights the conflicting interests of the working class, the politicians, and the religious leaders. Whereas many writers assume homogeneity between paramilitaries and hard-line Loyalist politicians, Nelson highlights the distrust and distance between these groups.

Sarah Nelson's analysis of the issues and interests of the various parties, particularly surrounding the UWC worker's strike of 1974, provides a valuable understanding of the conflict which is critical to any peaceful settlement. Nelson's insight shows that when analysts look past the sectarian issues and investigate issues such as social welfare and community action, the great common ground between Protestants and Catholics can be found.

Understanding Human Behavior and the Social Environment (Nelson-Hall Series in Social Welfare)
Published in Hardcover by Burnham Inc Pub (January, 1994)
Authors: Charles Zastrow and Karen K. Kirst-Ashman
Average review score:

Excelent Source of information
The authors of this book have worked really hard, and deserve a pat on the back. While there is A LOT of information crammed into each chapter, every tidbit of material is illustrated with case studies and little examples that really help aid comprehension of the material. There are a lot of definitions, which students usually have difficulty memorizing, however this book gives such good, real life examples that I feel students will have no trouble at all remembering the material.

I do wish there were some sample questions for the chapters though. I like to have some "sample test questions" just to re-assume myself I am on track.

In any case, this book is a wonderful source of information for anyone working in social services. Beginning students will like how easy it is to read.
